What is Precipitation Hardening?
Precipitation hardening, also known as age hardening, is a heat treatment process used to harden specific alloys such as certain stainless steels, aluminum, and copper-based materials. This method involves two main steps:

  1. Solution Treatment: Conducted at high temperatures to dissolve alloying elements.
  2. Ageing Treatment: Performed at lower temperatures to achieve the desired hardness. The alloy hardens only after this step.

Limitations of Precipitation Hardening

Material Condition:

    • Normalised State: Lowest cost but requires full heat treatment.
    • Solution Treated State: Only needs ageing, minimizing distortion.
    • Over-Aged Condition: Requires no further heat treatment but is soft enough for machining.

Ageing Specification:

  • Improper specification of the ageing condition can negatively impact corrosion resistance, reducing the longevity of the component.

Care in Handling and Communication:

  • Ensuring proper communication between the manufacturer and heat treater is essential to align the heat treatment process with the intended application and alloy properties.
